RAFFLES JUNIOR COLLEGE

CRICKET

Mr. Jamie Reeves [ Teacher in Charge ]

Our Manager, Coach, Evangelist, Motivator-in-Chief, Tallest member and the occasional leg-umpire, Mr.Reeves is the teacher-in-charge of Cricket in RJC

Born the day that Stalin died (look it up) in the UK. Attended Westcliff High School for Boys, where he captained the school rugby team and was a wicket-keeper/batsman for the First XI. Leicester University (1970-73) for first degree in Economics, where other pursuits took priority over team games. University of Kent at Canterbury (1973-75) for Masters in Quantitative Social Science.

Went into teaching in January ‘75, acquired a wife and re-acquired a fondness for sports. Some talent for football emerged and was quickly snapped up the local semi-professional team. Played for a total of 13 years; on the way accumulated 2 performances at Wembley Stadium, winning the FA Vase, and a couple of kids (one of each).

Having retired from competitive soccer, the lure of the east proved too strong, and arrived in Singapore at the end of 1989. Was appointed Economics tutor under the Humanities Programme at RJC, a post he still holds. In 1992 he was talked into a brief come-back with the now defunct Tyrwhitt Soccerites in the Singapore Premier League, and was runner-up for The Straits Times Award as player of the year.

This led to TV commentary on soccer: first on the Malaysian Cup, then the S-League, latterly Asian World Cup qualifiers, the Chinese National Football League, Korean League and any other obscure league Star Sports chooses to cover.

On appointment at RJC he was attached to the Track & Field team until 1996. Not content with coaching the athletes, he took up veterans athletics and won the Singapore Masters 800ms in 1995 and 1996, setting a new record on each occasion.

In 1997 he was asked to take over the Cricket Team, which revived a long dormant interest. Has only played one game of cricket in Singapore back in ‘94, making 63 runs at Singapore Chinese Sports Club, including two sixes which scattered swimmers in the adjacent swimming pool. Is currently seriously thinking of taking the game up once more.

His presence and hardwork always further us towards winning a match. He supports us right through thick and thin.
